The common raven (Corvus corax) is a large passerine bird in the genus Corvus, family Corvidae. It is one of the species commonly encountered in Europe, along with the carrion crow, hooded crow, and rook. The genus name Corvus is Latin for "raven". Ranging from 60–70 cm (24–28 in) in length, the common raven and the thick-billed raven represent the larger passerines. The common raven is the type species of the genus, named by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae. These birds have a robust and slender appearance, with a small, rounded head, a strong, conical beak that is elongated and pointed with a slightly curved end, strong legs, and a short, wedge-shaped tail. Their plumage is dominated by black, often with metallic iridescence.

The common raven is among the world's most intelligent animals, with an encephalization quotient equal to that of many non-human primates.
