Sumatran Orangutan

The Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) is a species of great ape native to the rainforests of Indonesia, now found only in parts of Sumatra. Classified in the genus Pongo, it was originally considered one species with the Bornean orangutan until 1996, when molecular evidence confirmed it as a full species. The most arboreal of the great apes, it spends most of its time in trees, with proportionally long arms and short legs, and reddish-brown hair covering its body. Dominant adult males develop distinctive cheek pads and make long calls that attract females and intimidate rivals. The Sumatran orangutan genome was sequenced in January 2011, making it the third species of great ape whose genome was sequenced, following humans and chimpanzees.
