The larva grows exponentially, molting four times before entering the pupal stage. Once ready to spin its cocoon, it secretes two continuous filaments of fibroin protein from glands in its head, hardening them with a gum-like sericin as they are extruded. This single thread can stretch nearly a kilometer, creating a fortress so dense that without human intervention to boil the cocoons, the moth would eventually chew its way out, destroying the continuous fiber.

The air in the bamboo shed is heavy and still, smelling faintly of crushed green leaves and warm dust.
