Gray Wolf

The silent architect of the wild, shaping ecosystems through fear and balance.

Native to the wild expanses of Eurasia and North America, the gray wolf (*Canis lupus*) is the largest living member of the dog family. In 1758, Carl Linnaeus published the binomial nomenclature for species in his *Systema Naturae*, classifying the wolf as *Canis lupus*. The nominate subspecies is the Eurasian wolf (*Canis lupus lupus*), based on the type specimen Linnaeus studied in Sweden. In the third edition of *Mammal Species of the World* (2005), mammalogist W. Christopher Wozencraft listed 38 subspecies of *Canis lupus*, including 36 wild subspecies and two additional ones: *familiaris* (domestic dog) and *dingo*. These subspecies were named over the past 250 years, and a number of them have gone extinct since their naming.

For millennia, the gray wolf has occupied a dual role in human consciousness. In 1758, Linnaeus classified the domestic dog as *Canis familiaris* and the wolf as *Canis lupus*, considering the dog a separate species because of its head, body, and upturning tail—*cauda recurvata*—which is not found in any other canid. A 1999 study of mitochondrial DNA indicated that the domestic dog may have originated from multiple wolf populations, with the dingo and New Guinea singing dog having developed when human populations were more isolated. Wozencraft referred to this mDNA study in forming his decision to list 38 subspecies under the common name "wolf." However, the classification of several of these canines as either species or subspecies has been challenged by the IUCN/SSC Canid Specialist Group in 2019, a 2020 *Trends in Ecology & Evolution* literature review, and the American Society of Mammalogists in 2021. In 2019, the IUCN/SSC Canid Specialist Group considered the New Guinea singing dog and the dingo to be feral dogs (*Canis familiaris*).

Gray wolves thrive in diverse landscapes across Eurasia and North America. In North America, mammalogist Robert M. Nowak analyzed skull morphology data in 1995 and proposed only five subspecies: the Arctic wolf (*C. l. arctos*), a large wolf from Alaska and western Canada (*C. l. occidentalis*), a small wolf from southeastern Canada (*C. l. lycaon*), a small wolf from the southwestern U.S. (*C. l. baileyi*), and a moderate-sized wolf originally found from Texas to Hudson Bay and from Oregon to Newfoundland (*C. l. nubilus*). In Eurasia, Sokolov and Rossolimo (1985) recognized seven Old World subspecies: *C. l. lupus*, *C. l. albus*, *C. l. pallipes*, *C. l. cubanenesis*, *C. l. campestris*, *C. l. chanco*, and *C. l. desertorum*. Nowak's 1995 analysis recognized the first four, synonymized *campestris*, *chanco*, and *desertorum* with *C. l. lupus*, and recognized *C. l. communis* as distinct. In 2003, Nowak also recognized *C. l. arabs*, *C. l. hattai*, *C. l. italicus*, and *C. l. hodophilax*. The Italian wolf (*Canis lupus italicus*) was first recognized in 1921 by zoologist Giuseppe Altobello, later rejected by several authors, but reaffirmed by Nowak in 2002. The Iberian wolf (*Canis lupus signatus*) was first recognized in 1907 by zoologist Ángel Cabrera. The Himalayan wolf is distinguished by its mitochondrial DNA, which is basal to all other wolves; in 2019, the IUCN/SSC Canid Specialist Group recommended classifying it as *Canis lupus chanco* until a genetic analysis of holotypes is available.
